As Joan Nebot, wine critic, says in one of his recent articles, our sparkling wine was the first Penedès “champagne”. We are concerned here with a wine with a secondary fermentation in the same bottle (Traditional method), a blend of the French variety Chardonnay with the quintessential variety native to our region, Xarel·lo. The latter is one of the oldest varieties grown on the Mediterranean.
Xarel·lo is the most commonly grown variety in the DO Penedès and has adapted extremely well at our vineyard of 40 hectares. At Mas Comtal, we have 15 hectares of Xarel·lo over 50 years old, providing qualitative production year after year that is accentuated with time. Chardonnay was planted on our vineyard for the first time in 1982, responding successfully. It brings great elegance and aging potential to our “champagne”.
